Speak up for good government.

From my perspective, it has been a particularly tough month for democracy with the assault on Ukraine, and, closer to home with the failure by Ohio officials to complete the redistricting process. However, two items have helped me to find some room for hope amidst all of the negative news:

  1. In my former home of San Francisco, three school board members were recalled. These were Democratic officials in a very progressive/Democratic city. I believe that the simple message sent by the voters in that election was that regardless of whether an elected official shares your ideology, if you don’t do your job you don’t deserve to hold office!

  2. Last Thursday at a webinar hosted by ASQ’s Government Division, Dr. Steven Kull Director of the University of Maryland Program for Public Consultation shared the methodology and data surrounding the work they have done to identify widely supported common ground positions on many of the key issues facing our country. I hope many of you were able to attend this outstanding program. In addition to the energy and engagement of those that attended the webinar, I was particularly heartened by overwhelming data shared by Dr. Kull that reflects broad agreement between deep red and deep blue areas on a number of policy solutions. I was also heartened by data that supports the theme that voters value results over party or ideology. I will share much more information from last week’s webinar in next month’s newsletter.

Earlier this month I had the opportunity to visit London. As was the case following my U.S. cross country road trip last summer, it gave me an opportunity to reflect on our Speak Up for Good Government efforts and on the challenges our democracy faces. Like any country, England has its own set of problems. After touring the Tower of London, I was particularly struck by the journey the United Kingdom has taken from the brutality of medieval times to their current parliamentary democracy. I was also struck by the fact that the city and the UK’s very existence were severely threatened by the bombing of World War II.

As I toured many of the beautiful parts of London, noting similarities to some of the cities I have visited in the U.S., I was struck by the fact that England came into existence long before the United States; and many of our systems, customs, etc. come from and have evolved from Great Britain. Although I’m far from an expert on this topic, my understanding is that the British system of government and the parliamentary democracies of many other European countries typically rely on opposing parties working together. If opposing parties can work together in other countries, so can ours!

England and many other European governments evolved from autocracies to democracies. Democracies can also devolve into autocracies. That’s what makes this work so important to me. We are very lucky to have our personal liberties and lucky that our form of government is designed to have elected officials accountable to voters. Preserving and enhancing our democracy requires all of us to “Speak Up for Good Government”!

One of my favorite movies is The American President. President Andrew Shepherd (Michael Douglas) in the pivotal scene of the movie says “…America isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You gotta want it bad…” In the spirit of President Shepherd, please share this newsletter and consider getting involved!

Until next month,

Allan

We are nearly through the first month of the new year. Hopefully the Omicron tidal wave is starting to recede, and you and your family are healthy and safe.

Just a few updates in this month’s newsletter:

Collaboration Between Voice of the People and ASQ’s Government Division

I am continuing to work closely with ASQ’s Government Division and with Voice of the People. I recently arranged a call between leaders of these two outstanding organizations and was very pleased that they shared my belief that there is an opportunity for synergy and collaboration going forward.

Voice of the People promotes and advocates for a model of public consultation through policymaking simulations, conducted by the University of Maryland’s Program for Public Consultation. These simulations reveal common ground that can be leveraged by our elected officials to support meaningful legislative solutions for many of our biggest problems. Regular use of this model by our elected officials would promote a strong partnership with the public.

This public consultation methodology/toolset will be presented at an upcoming webinar for ASQ’s Government Division. The webinar is expected to be open to the public. I will share registration info, once available.

My hope is that members of the Government Division will recognize the value of this public consultation methodology and promote its active use at all levels of government. The power of this synergy is that ASQ’s Government Division has over 5,000 members representing all levels of government throughout the world, so their members can actively promote and facilitate the standard use of a consultative and common ground approach to governing.

Contrary to what we are often led to believe, data does not support that voters are as polarized as frequently portrayed. I believe that a true measure of a government’s effectiveness and overall commitment to excellence is the consistent use of tools and best practices such as policymaking simulations to support their work. Going forward I hope to identify and facilitate similar opportunities for collaboration between good government organizations.

New Organization: Country First

I am very intrigued by Country First, an organization founded by Rep. Adam Kinzinger, whose mission is to “defeat the Toxic Tribalism tearing our families, friendships, and country apart”. As stated on the Country First website: “Think of Country First as an adjective that can describe any American – Republican, Democrat, Independent, or anything else. It simply means you’re a reasonable person of good will, who recognizes we don’t have to be enemies just because we have different experiences and perspectives.”

I have added to our Speak Up website a link to Country First under the Respect for Opposing Views principle and will be reaching out to them in the next couple of months.

Request for Help: Speak Up for Good Government Formal Structure

Speak Up for Good Government is now a Limited Liability Company (LLC). Adding that designation minimizes my personal liability as I continue to grow Speak Up for Good Government. I would like to do more to further formalize Speak Up for Good Government’s structure and governance. I’d greatly appreciate assistance on this from one of the lawyers on our distribution.

Have a great month!

Allan

This month’s issue will be fairly short – briefly reflecting on our 2021 progress and looking forward to 2022.

2021 Progress

Since Speak Up for Good Government was launched in March, we have established a vision and mission and eight good government principles that guide our work. We have established important connections with good government entities such as Voice of the People, American Society for Quality’s (ASQ) Government Division, PolitiFact, and Issue One. We have submitted testimony to the Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress and have a monthly newsletter. We have a website that was upgraded last month to support our continued work and support potential growth in 2022 and beyond.

What to Expect in 2022

All eight good government principles are critical to reducing legislative gridlock and empowering voters, but it is not realistic for me to personally work on all eight principles. Looking ahead to next year, much of my effort will be supporting the Commitment to Excellence principle through my work with ASQ and supporting the Partnership with the Public principle through my work with Voice of the People.

Although much of my time will be focused on the above items, I will continue to highlight work and news on all eight principles in our monthly newsletter and in social media posts. In addition, in order to effectively promote work on the other six good government principles, I will recruit team members who have a passion for each of those principles.

An additional focus and challenge for 2022, will be to effectively manage the growth of Speak Up for Good Government, ensuring we’re structured for growth and ensuring the work we take on is consistent with time and resources we have available.

December News

I was very pleased to learn that the Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress recently passed its second set of recommendations and has fully implemented thirty-three recommendations. The Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress is a truly bipartisan committee that’s tasked with finding ways to “make Congress work better for the American people”. Here’s a link to their most recent press release and a link to the committee’s website.

ASQ has posted a document that provides an excellent overview of plans for their Center of Electoral Quality and Integrity. This work strongly supports our Free and Fair Elections principle. I will be promoting it in 2022 with elected officials and good government organizations.

For Republicans on our distribution, I recently learned about the Republican Accountability Project. Their work supports our “free and fair elections” and “commitment to problem solving” principles.

Specifically, the Republican Accountability Project is working to:

  1. Support Republicans in Congress who, at great personal and political risk, are defying party leadership and defending the institutions of our republic.

  2. Unseat those who have tried to overturn a legitimate election and supported impunity for political violence, including by strategically recruiting and promoting primary challengers through their PAC.

  3. Push back against lies and conspiracy theories about widespread voter fraud and “rigged” elections.

Wishing you and your family a healthy, safe and joyous holiday season and a very happy New Year.

Allan
